What If Someone Has Your Lost Dog?

If you own a dog, you need to take all the precautions you can to keep it safe and protect it from getting lost. You should have a microchip containing their information implanted under their skin as well as having a detailed dog ID tag made for your pet. If your dog gets lost anyway, you need to know your rights if someone else takes possession of them.

Private Citizens

If someone in your neighborhood or city finds your pet and takes them in, they are assuming certain responsibilities. They are essentially agreeing to keep your pet well fed and cared for while making honest attempts to find you. They are also assuming responsibility for any damage your dog may do to people or other pets. By taking in your dog, they are protecting them from ending up in a kill shelter where your time to reclaim them is limited. In most instances, those who found your pet will be glad to return them. If these adoptive parents do not want to let your dog go, you should still be able to get your pet back since they are considered your property. However, laws differ in various states, and other factors may carry some weight, such as how long the other people have cared for your pet. Obviously, the sooner you find your dog the better for everyone.

Shelters

Shelters also have different rules governing how they deal with lost pets. However, they will not immediately put your animal up for adoption. For instance, the Humane Society and most shelters will scan for a microchip. If your pet has one in place, you should be reunited in short order. Of course, a pet ID tag will help to bring your pet home. If your dog has lost its tag and was never properly chipped, the clock begins to tick on recovering your pet. If your animal is at a no-kill shelter and you do not reclaim them in a reasonable amount of time, your pet will be put up for adoption. If you find your pet after the adoption process has taken place, chances are you will not get your animal back.

The law varies depending on where you live, but if your pet is lost, you need to reclaim it as soon as possible to prevent it from being euthanized in a kill shelter or from being adopted by someone else. Your pet must wear proper ID at all times and be microchipped so that others can return them to you if necessary.
