Do you want to purchase an aquarium, but are not sure what size aquarium to get? It can help to know the basics when it comes to picking the right size.

Horizontal vs Vertical

There are a few things to know about getting a horizontal or a vertical tank. A horizontal tank is going to provide more swimming room than a vertical tank because of the nature of how fish swim. Another benefit of a horizontal tank is that the lights in a horizontal tank are also going to reach the bottom of the tank easier, which can help with plants and coral that are growing.

10-Gallon Tank

A small 10-gallon tank is a viable option if you are looking to have a single betta fish. It is still going to require a filter to keep the water clean, and regular water changes every week. While it's simple to maintain, it doesn't allow you to do a lot with decorations or have a lot of fish. It may be a good idea as a starter tank for a child or if you do not have a lot of room in your home, but you may find yourself outgrowing it quickly.

20-Gallon Tank

A 20-gallon aquarium can be a good starter size because it is going to be relatively easy to maintain due to the smaller size of the tank. There are going to be fewer chemicals needed to keep the water clear and make it easier to change out the water as well.

The cost of a 20-gallon tank is also going to make it an affordable option for anybody that wants to get started with having an aquarium. There are plenty of starter kits that you can buy for these small sized tanks that have the hoods, lights, heaters, and filters.

55-Gallon Tank

While the cost of a 20-gallon fish tank is going to be affordable, know that the tank itself is not going to look that impressive. A 55-gallon tank is going to get to the point where the size looks notably bigger and allows you to do more things with the fish tank. It opens up the possibilities to more species of fish that require more room with a bigger tank, and there are still starter kits that you can purchase at this size that have all of your essentials and keep you within your budget. While a 55-gallon tank is more than twice the size of a 20-gallon tank, you'll find that the maintenance with the two at that size can be very similar.
