Purchasing a food-dispense toy for your dog is a great way to keep them entertained, as well as use their skills to get to the food that is stuck inside. Working out their skills in this way can help your dog to keep a strong mind and brain. Before purchasing one though, consider these five tips:

  1. Make Sure it's Durable: It's important that you purchase a food-dispense toy that is actually going to last a while before your dog rips it up. You don't want to purchase one that your dog can tear up after just a couple of jabs at it. This won't keep your dog entertained and there won't actually be a point to purchasing one of these toys.
  2. Make Sure it's Easy to Clean: Being able to easily clean the food-dispense toy is important because you want to be sure that it doesn't become moldy, which is hazardous to your dog's health. This means that the opening should be large enough for you to at least stick a small scrub brush inside so you can scrub out any stuck food.
  3. Watch Your Dog While They Use It: It's not a good idea to give your dog access to the food-dispense toy while you are not home. You want to be sure that you are around in case any small pieces break off that your dog can choke on. It's important to take these small pieces and throw them away as soon as you notice them.
  4. Don't Use for Feedings: Giving your dog a food-dispense toy shouldn't replace their regular feeding schedule. Your dog should have access to their regular nutritious food during the time you feed them normally. Food-dispense toys are for entertainment only. You shouldn't be using them often because you don't want your dog to wait on treats instead of their regular meals.
  5. Don't Rely on it for Exercise: Although your dog is working out in a way when they use a food-dispense toy, most dogs will lay down while trying to get the treats out. This means that they aren't working out enough. You should still take your dog outside for a walk or to play catch to ensure that they are getting some cardio exercise in, as well.

When you consider these five tips, you can be sure that the food-dispense toy is going to be useful for your dog in a positive way. Contact a business, such as Petland of Crystal Lake, for more information about these devices.
